A GOLF CART WILL LIGHTEN THE LOAD

I don’t know about you, but one of the benefits I get from playing golf is the exercise of walking 9 or 18 holes of beautifully landscaped terrain. Many golfers enjoy the motorized golf cart that gets you there faster and easier but I like to walk. Walking my round of golf lets me get great exercise, enjoy nature and gives me time between each shot to think about the shot coming up and strategize my next move. At my home golf course, Goose River Golf Course in Rockport, ME, we don’t have the option of hiring a caddy so we either rely on the accelerator of a motorized golf cart of our two feet. With the appropriate push/pull golf cart the walk can be enjoyable, satisfying and fitness based.

I started out with a small pull cart that supported my golf bag and was easy to handle. I really liked this cart because it was so quick and easy to store in the back of my car and did everything I wanted it to do. This cart was the Hippo Golf Deluxe Pull Cart. This cart has a strong yet lightweight steel frame, comfortable contoured handle. It features one-step collapsible design for easy storage and has durable easy to install wheels. The nylon bag straps with snap-lock buckles hold your bag secure and provides storage space for tees, balls and scorecard holder.

As I got more involved with the ladies golf program at the course, I found that I wanted more room for carrying accessories and also one that could accommodate an umbrella stand as we played rain or shine. I did some research, tried a few out and found that the Bag Boy Express 180-3 Wheel Push Cart fit my needs perfectly. I am pushing instead of pulling my golf clubs. This is an advantage to me as I tend to look at my golf clubs as I decide which club to use for my next shot…..sort of a visualization thing. It also has a storage compartment for tees, snacks, glasses, pencils, etc. It comes in a variety of colors, stores well in the back of the car and sets-up very quickly. The ultra lightweight tubing allows for easy maneuverability, has maintenance free 12″ non-flat tires, and hi-tech, rustproof aluminum wheels with steel ball bearings. It also has a universal fit, multi-position umbrella holder, sue-grip ergonomically shaped handle and a convenient hand-activated parking brake. I like the deluxe scorecard holder with storage compartment and a built-in beverage holder. The single push button folding mechanism and quick release Velcro bag strap make for easy set-up and the patent pending fold-up front wheel allows increased compatibility.

Very similar to the Bag Boy cart is the New 2008 Sun Mountain (Push) Speed Golf Cart VI . I don’t own this one but golf with ladies who do and they really love it. It has a few more added features and appears to be the Cadillac of push golf carts. The “new” features of this cart include an accessories tray with magnetic lid, bungee score card holder, updated pencil tee and ball holders. It has a swivel beverage holder and a mesh headcover tray. It includes a new umbrella mound and holder for securing an opened umbrella (the umbrella is not included). The quick release bungee cords secure the bag to the cart with brackets that adjust to the size of your bag. It also includes an adjustable-height comfort grip handle, large shock-absorbing pneumatic tires. The brake is operated at the handle. This cart fold to 36″x16″x13: and weighs approximately 16.6 pounds. I have a feeling that this might be my next cart.

A GOOD GOLF GLOVE IS ESSENTIAL

A GOOD GLOVE =A GOOD GRIP=A GOOD SHOT Choosing a golf glove is like choosing a pair of shoes. If you choose a poor quality pair of shoes that don’t fit right, you are not at your best. This is also true of golf gloves. A glove doesn’t have to be expensive but does need to be of good quality and fit properly. Wearing a golf glove provides the proper grip on the golf club and allows you to complete a swing without your hand slipping and sending the ball off into a different direction and adding needless strokes to your game. I have tried gloves from a few different manufacturers but have found two of them who are consistent with their quality and fit. WITH THE CLICK OF A KEY……..golf instruction, golf advice, golf how-to’s are at your fingertips with e books. I have looked at a few of them and find them very helpful. Sometimes while working at the computer, I need a little diversion so will bring up one of my golf e books and dream that I’m on a golf course in wonderfully warm weather and playing the game of my life exhibiting all the skills and tips. GOLF FOR DUMMIES is a wonderful DVD for beginners as well as seasoned golfers. Face to face with Gary McCord, CBS Golf Commentator and Sr. PGA Tour Champion, is an informative and easy way to get the basics of golf or to review and tweek your your game. I like to watch it whenever there’s a little something amiss with my game. Staying with the basics works for me.

PLAY A ROUND OF GOLF WITH WENDY WARD is another video I previewed recently. Wendy Ward is a two-time LPGA Tour winner and in this video she plays a round of golf at The Greyhawk Golf Course in Scottsdale, Arizona. In the video she demonstrates valuable tips on swing tempo, club selection, wedge play, and fairway woods and explains how you can apply these tips to your own game. Definitely worth having in your video library.

The Right Tools for the Game

When playing golf, you and your golf clubs become partners and together you play the game. Golf clubs are made for gender, height, skill level and aesthetic preferences. It’s not necessary to buy the best to begin but you should purchase a set of clubs for your skill level and your purpose. If you’re only going to play a couple of times a week you might not want or need a set of clubs that a daily player might want. Sets of golf clubs range from under a hundred dollars to thousands of dollars. A Little Bit of Knowledge is Worth the Time

EDUCATE YOURSELF. I like to be well prepared when I undertake something new. One of my favorite ways to enter a new venture is to read and learn. That way, I make myself familiar with the lingo and at least I sound like I know what I’m doing. So, when I started making my way into the game of golf, I wanted to make sure I could talk my way onto the first tee.

One of my favorite books A Woman’s Own Golf Book: Simple Lessons for a Lifetime of Great Golf by Barbara Puett and Jim Apfelbaum is a good place to start.

There are many, many other books and videos available that will fit your interests and your learning styles. Golf for Ladies Only - with Cindy Reid are two collections of videos that I find particularly helpful.

Even though I have been playing for a few years, I continue to build my golf library. Books and videos are helpful tools of the game and never go out of date. Just like a favorite recipe book, you will collect favorite golf books. Enjoy the reading and get ready to tee up!
